She was the first to bring Tejano to mainstream culture. The tragic loss of her life shattered her growing popularity and, it is what happens often when a bright deeply genial superstar dies young, she has left many mourning her unrealized potential. The fans have worked hard through the years to preserve her legacy. Selena's tragic death by shooting caused a reaction in the Latino community that was similar to reactions following the deaths of Elvis Presley or John Lennon. The most well-known Latino musician across North America, Selena's music has touched many lives across different cultures. Selena was a hot glamorous performer on stage that was frequently called the Latina Madonna. Off-stage Selena was an excellent role model since she participated actively in antidrug and AIDS campaigns.
